The Copper Box Arena in Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park will join some of the UK’s most iconic venues to be part of The National Lottery and ITV’s I Am Team GB, the nation’s biggest ever sports day, being held across the UK on Saturday 27th August 2016.
The nationwide event has inspired thousands of UK clubs to open their doors to new participants for free and will also be a homecoming for the lottery-funded Olympic athletes when they return from Rio, inspiring everyone, no matter what their level of fitness, to come together with Olympic heroes and famous faces from ITV in the biggest ever UK-wide sports day.
Popstar and TV presenter, Alesha Dixon, has been confirmed to attend the event at the Copper Box Arena, which will coincide with the International Handball Cup, hosted by London GD Handball Club. Lottery-funded Olympians returning from Rio will also be in attendance.
As well as having a go at handball, one of the Olympic events held at the Copper Box Arena during London 2012, this family friendly event will give people the chance to try a whole host of other fun and free activities including speed bounce, fitness challenge bike and row, gymnastics balance, table tennis, athletics running and jumping skills tests plus many more.
GLL Sport Foundation ambassador and GB Long Jumper Dan Bramble will be in attendance to help out with activities and share his experience of being an elite athlete with the community. ITV also have some more surprise guests up their sleeve.
The Copper Box Arena open day runs from 8.30am to 6.00pm. To register to take part, visit http://iamteamgb.com/hero-event/the-copper-box-arena-says-i-am-team-gb/. You can also join the conversation on social media using #iamteamgb.
Alongside other iconic venues taking part in I Am Team GB, including the famous cobbles of Coronation Street and the hills and dales of Emmerdale, Better, the UK’s largest network of public gyms and leisure centres and operator of the Copper Box Arena, will also be hosting open days at more than 200+ centers across the country.
Russ Barnes, Partnership Manager at the Copper Box Arena, said:
“All the staff at the Copper Box Arena are proud to fly the I Am Team GB flag and host one of the showpiece events as part of this inspiring campaign.
“This will be a great opportunity for our members and local residents to come and join in with the different activities along side our staff and some famous faces to be part of this nationwide celebration of sport and our Olympic success at Rio.”
To celebrate the support the nation gives them by playing The National Lottery, Team GB’s returning Olympians will join famous faces from ITV at events across the UK. Over £80 million has been raised each year by National Lottery players to help fund elite athletes during the four-year build-up to the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.
To encourage people to get active, ITV will also be switching off their transmission for an hour across all channels to get the nation to get moving. At 9.30am on 27 August, the big switch off will see ITV’s seven channels come off air for an hour to encourage the great British public to get up and out and involved in sport at one of the many events happening across the country.
The event is taking place in conjunction with the British Olympic Association (BOA), UK Sport and is supported by Join In.
