What is the GLL Sport Foundation?

GLL Sport Foundation has been established to assist the development and potential success of young sports people. The Foundation aims to reduce the financial burden of training and competition costs on talented young athletes, many of whom aspire to participate in Olympics and Paralympic Games. The Foundation will engage and recognise youth sport and support talented young athletes specifically within partnerships where GLL or partners manage sports and leisure venues.

What are the aims of the Foundation?

To assist talented athletes young sports people achieve their full sporting potential.
To promote the positive influence those successful young athletes can have on other young people within local communities.

Why is GLL supporting young athletes?

GLL seeks to inspire and motivate young people through sport. The Foundation aims to provide tangible help for young athletes to support them in achieving their full sporting potential and in promoting these athletes as positive role models within their local communities.

How do I qualify for an award?

The Foundation supports athletes that compete at a regional level and above.  Award levels are based on our awards criteria.

The Foundation supports athletes that live, are educated, or are affiliated to a club that has a training base that GLL or a partner operates.

How are awards assessed?

The GLL Sport Foundation works in partnership with Sports Aid to ensure that support for young athletes reaches those identified by their Governing Bodies as having special talent and ensures that our Foundation joins the National Talent Pathways agreed within British Sport.
The Foundation supports athletes across GLL and partner operated partnerships across the UK. Applicants must either live or be in education within a partnership where GLL or partners operate sport and leisure veneus; or be affiliated to a sports club that has a training base at a GLL or partner operated sport and leisure venue*.
*Where Local Authority and Public Sector partners operate an athlete talent scheme the GLL Sport Foundation will work in partnership; awards and award terms and conditions will be aligned to the partnership agreement.

Can I apply if I am already funded?

Athletes can apply, individual applications will be analysed by Sports Aid, thus maximising the support to all athletes recognised by their National Governing Bodies.  Athletes already funded through Local Authority and Public Sector organisation programmes can apply, but will be directly linked to the localised programmes for training membership support only.

Where is the GLL Sport Foundation available?

The GLL Sport Foundation is proud to work with our partners. It is their shared commitment to promoting sport and physical activity that enables the GLL Sport Foundation to support talented young athletes and wider communities.

How will athletes benefit?

Athletes receive either financial support through grants ranging from £200-£1250 and or training membership support providing free access to sport and leisure venues currently managed by GLL and our partners. For full details of training membership benefits please view Athlete Benefits.

When will awards be made?

The deadline for 2015/16 award applications is the 20th of February 2016. The Foundation will notify all applicants on the outcome of their application by May, and awards will be made and distributed shortly after.

How will the funding be given?

Financial awards will be given as a single payment, and distributed directly by the Foundation and our partners.

What sports is the Foundation supporting?

Primarily the Foundation will look to support Olympic and Paralympic sports, however applications will be considered from other sports recognised by Sport England.
