The 2022 New Year’s honours list saw a host of GSF supported athletes awarded. A total of 12 past and present GSF athletes have been awarded OBE’s and MBE’s.
The honours highlight the success of athletes at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympics and their work outside of sport.
Tom Daley received an OBE for his services to diving, having come back from Tokyo with a gold and bronze medal. His work for charities and LGBTQ+ rights has also been recognised, with Tom using his profile and voice to highlight those who have less freedoms and rights than those in the UK.
His synchro diving partner and Olympic gold medallist Matty Lee received an MBE for services to diving.
Joe Choong became the first British man to win a gold medal in Modern Pentathlon at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics and has earned an MBE.
At Tokyo 2020 BMX freestyle made its debut and so did Charlotte Worthington. She won gold with an outstanding performance and has been honoured with an MBE.
Hannah Russell upgraded her MBE and is now an OBE for services to swimming. In the summer she Won Paralympic Gold and bronze in Tokyo adding to 3 golds, 3 bronze and silver won at the previous two games.
Another swimmer Tully Kearney becomes an MBE having returned from Tokyo 2020 with gold and silver medals in her debut Paralympics.
Another 3 of our swimmers became MBEs, Tom Dean beat the odds to win 2 gold medals in the 200m freestyle and 4x200m freestyle relay. While Calum Jarvis also received a gold medal for his performance for the team to get them to the final. Past supported athlete Anna Hopkin was also awarded.
Past supported athletes – Aled Davies adds and OBE to his current MBE for services to Athletics. Chris Skelley receives an MBE for services to judo. Alex Yee received an MBE for services to triathlon – MBE.
