Rafael Rhys Pollitt – ‘Building on my 2017 progress’

Rafael Rhys Pollitt made a real impact on the Fencing world in 2017 and is hoping to continue his form into 2018, with the support of the GLL Sport Foundation.

“2017 was all about building a solid foundation to take forward to 2018. I have achieved the ranking of no.1 Cadet in GB, as well as improving my Under-20 and senior rankings which I knew would put me in a good position for 2018, allowing me to compete effectively across a range of tournaments. I have been gaining experience in the U17 European circuit, and made a debut of 27th at my first international event in Austria, competing against athletes 2/3 years older than me.”

Rafael has shown great promise from the start of his Fencing career with achievements such as, being British Under-14 Boys Foil Champion 2 years running. England Under-13 and Under-15 Boys Foil Champion, holding both the English and British titles in the same season. Number One in the Under-15 England Boy’s Foil Rankings 2017, to name a few.

Rafael attention now turns to the Junior under 20 world Cup in February. Which, along with almost daily training at Better Gym will now serve as preparation for the Cadet European Championships and Cadet World Championships. Having been selected to represent Great Britain after making it to the top of the British under 17 Cadet Men’s Foil Rankings.

“Now in 2018 I’m looking to build upon my results and progress in 2017 to reach new heights. I’ve qualified for the European and World U17 championships, as well as my first U20 World Cup. I could not have made the progress I have without the ongoing support of The GLL Sport Foundation who have been instrumental in enhancing my physical fitness with a Better Gym membership, as well as giving me financial help to train abroad.”

Rafael’s coach, Dominique Szokolovics is also looking to another successful year and noted the impact of GSF support. “Rafael is very privileged to enjoy the support of a unique organisation like The GLL Sport Foundation. I have seen him grow athletically in 2017, and he has a great willingness to reward those who support him by working hard and achieving results. 2018 will be an exciting year.”

Good Luck in 2018, Rafael!
