Summer Achievements 2017

GSF supported athletes

We recently sent out a survey to our supported athletes for feedback on how to improve our services in future years. We’ve had a great response so far, thank you to those athletes that have replied with your comments. Lots of these athletes are very grateful for the support and sent in their recent results and quotes on how they benefit from the support from the GLL Sport Foundation. Here are just some of them:

Paninder Bains – “I’ve been involved in a number of voluntary summer classes in my local borough to teach young children martial arts. Additionally, I am able to keep up my training through the GLL membership and promote fitness in the community.”

Amy Holder – “I got selected for Great Britain on two occasions; at the European Throws Cup and the European U23 Championships where I made the final. I have also won both England U23s and England Senior Championships where I was selected to compete for England at the Manchester International.”

Holly Dunford – “I was recently crowned the new World Champion in the Women’s Double Sculls with my partner Zoe Adamson. It’s been a great season topped with a world gold medal. I just wanted to say thank you for the support that has helped me achieve my goals.”

Charlotte Bergqvist – “I participated in the Women’s Lacrosse World Cup. After a tricky pool stage we ended up finishing 5th overall, the highest ranking for the Scottish team in 25 years! Thanks for all your support, especially the physio.”

Andrew Summers – “I got my highest ever finish in the British Triathlon Age Group Championships (5th overall, 2nd in AG) and a six minute PB in the London Marathon (2 hrs 37 mins). Having the training membership for GLL centres has really helped; I use the track at Mile End more often now the sessions are free.”

Jacob Leach – “I competed at the British Nationals as a trial for the Para World Championships and successful gained a place amongst the 26 GB athletes.”

Rayell Eytle-Rock – “I have recently come back from the U20 Basketball European Championships. I was representing Great Britain and we did really well getting the bronze medal! Now I’m back I’ll continue to use the facilities you provide me with and am extremely grateful. This wouldn’t be possible without you.”

Melissa Wilson – “The GB Rowing Team announced selection for the World Rowing Championships and I have been selected in the women’s pair. This event as been won by GB at the past two Olympics, so we are looking to learn from the amazing success. Thank you so much for GLL’s support over the past three years; it’s been tricky balancing being a full-time student with striving to be competitive internationally, and GLL has really helped.”

Josie Griffin – “At the National Madison Championships my partner and I came second. We were gutted to just miss out on the national title but on the day the winning pair were sadly stronger.”

Charlie Hopkins – “At the Swim England National Summer meet in Sheffield I won my first national medal, coming second place in the open men’s 1500m freestyle. Currently on a recovery part of the season, trying to make the most of my gym membership to keep up my fitness.”

Ffion Higginson – “I received my first Welsh vest where I competed in Dublin in the 1500m steeplechase and placed 5th at the SIAB competition. I want to say a huge thank you for the support the award has given me.”

Jane Bell – “I’m having a good year as an age group athlete! I won the European Aquathlon Championships in Bratislava and got bronze at the European Sprint Triathlon Championships. My free membership has significantly helped; the monthly amount I’ve saved helped to pay for triathlon entry face fees.”

Ethan Hance – “Ethan has returned from representing Ulster at the U14 Inter Provincial Championships. He won 2/3 of his matches for his team. The team as a whole finished third, just one point behind Leinster. Thank you for your support that helps Ethan to play tennis at a national level.”

Jim Pope – “I won the junior British Bouldering Championships and came 6th in the senior category. I’m competing in more senior competitions this year as well as the juniors, and your support has meant more than ever! Thanks.”

Lucy Thomas – “Lucy recently signed for Arsenal and has moved from her previous club, Oxford United. She played in three women’s Super League fixtures and attended an England U18 training camp. Many thanks again for the support you have provided.”

Tim Sanders – “Due to the GLL training award I was able to get physio to ensure I was fit for tournaments and the money saved from the gym membership paid for half the flights to the USA to compete.”

James Story – “In July I represented Wales at the Commonwealth Youth Games in the Bahamas and came home with the silver medal in the singles and bronze medal in the doubles. A great achievement considering a lot of the top players were two years older than him and rated in the world a lot higher.”

These are just some of the quotes from athletes about how the GLL Sport Foundation helps their athlete journeys. We are incredibly proud of what we do, but always striving for better, which is why the athlete survey has gone out.
