The new £1.7m extension to the gym at White Horse Leisure and Tennis Centre was officially opened today by Vale of White Horse District Council and the council’s leisure provider GLL.
The White Horse Leisure and Tennis Centre now features a substantial 290sqm extension to the gym, newly refurbished changing rooms, the latest Technogym ‘Excite’ equipment, a new outside area for young children using the crèche, and a new ‘Science Vale inspired’ canopy over the main entrance. Funding was provided by Vale of White Horse District Council and GLL.
White Horse Leisure and Tennis Centre is used by 800,000 visitors a year. The additional space and new equipment will mean at least 50 more people will be able to use the gym at any one time.
The official opening featured a guest appearance from Wheelchair Tennis Paralympian Louise Hunt and GLL Sport Foundation supported athlete, who competed at London 2012 and Rio 2016. We are very grateful to Louise for attending this event and hope she will be involved with many more in the future.
Louise was joined for the official ribbon cutting by Cllr Mike Badcock, Chairman of Vale of White Horse District Council, and Peter Bundey, Deputy Managing Director at GLL and Cllr Charlotte Dickson, Cabinet Member for Leisure at Vale of White Horse District Council.
Louise Hunt said: “The gym extension is brilliant, when I came in here I was overwhelmed at how adaptable and accessible the equipment is to use. The range is great and available for everyone to use, so no matter who you are come down and give it a go.”
Peter Bundey, Deputy Managing Director at GLL, said: “We are delighted that the strong partnership with Vale of White Horse District Council has meant we have been able to extend these already impressive facilities and look forward to welcoming the community, young and old, to try out the equipment.”
To give people an opportunity to try out the extended gym and new equipment, and to celebrate its 15 year anniversary, the White Horse Leisure and Tennis Centre is holding a family open weekend on Saturday 1 and Sunday 2 April, including lots of free events throughout both days. More details about this event will be announced shortly.
