On Tuesday 16th June the Islington GLL Sport Foundation Awards evening took place at Islington Town Hall. The event brought together around 70 attendees, including 27 GSF supported athletes.
Highlights
- The evening began with a warm welcome from Councillor Ruth Hayes, Deputy Leader of Islington Council and the Executive Member for Health and Social Care. She praised the achievements of the athletes and spoke highly of the partnership with GLL.
- The presentation featured a national GSF update delivered by Regional Director and Head of the GLL Sport Foundation Tony Wallace. Gillan Kelly, Islington Partnership Manager, provided a local GSF update and highlighted the work GLL do across the borough.
- 4 athletes took part in a Q&A, this included Lily Caunt (Triathlon), Kye Malcolm (Trampolining), Kola Abidogun (Fencing), Vanessa Wallace (Shot Put and Javelin). It was great to hear their insights, including GSF ambassador Vanessa Wallace sharing her experience of competing at the Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games.
- The awards were handed out by Deputy Mayor, Councillor Jilani Chowdhury and GLL Chief Officer, Justin Jardine. A profile for each athlete was read out as the athletes collected their certificate and goody bag.
- An enjoyable evening concluded with dinner from A Taste of Passion who served delicious Caribbean Food.
- In addition to Councillor Ruth Hayes and Councillor Jilani Chowdhury, also in attendance from Islington Council were Victoria Lawson (Chief Executive), Andrew Bedford (Assistant Director Highways and Greenspace) and Martyn Lewis (Sports Facilities Manager.
