Young Speed Skating Sensation Age 10 Retains British Championship Title

GLL Sport Foundation athlete Zayyah Wright once again demonstrated his exceptional talent by retaining his under-12 British Champion title at the British Short Track Championship. The two-day event, held on January 4th and 5th at Nottingham's National Ice Centre, marked a significant milestone in Zayyah's burgeoning career.

At just 10 years old, this was Zayyah's fourth appearance in this age group. He began competing at the tender age of 7 and has shown remarkable progress over the years, finishing sixth, second, and first in previous championships.

Zayyah's skating journey began in Singapore, where he learned the ropes from former Korean Olympic speed skaters. Reflecting on his time there, he recalls, "With the weather being so hot, the ice rink was the best place to go."

Since moving back to the UK in 2021, Zayyah has been training with the Aldwych Speed Club in Guildford. Founded in 1908 and originally a roller skating club, Aldwych Speed Club is the oldest speed skating club in the UK. The club offers rigorous training sessions twice a week, focusing on technique and speed. "It's really exciting to train with current and former Team GB short track skaters at Aldwych," Zayyah enthusiastically shares.

But Zayyah's talents extend beyond the ice. He is a skilled swimmer, competing for the Hillingdon Swimming Club at the Hillingdon Sports and Leisure Complex. He also represents his school in a variety of sports including cricket, rugby, football, athletics, and swimming, hinting at a promising future in sports.

With such a diverse array of talents and a solid support system, Zayyah Wright is undoubtedly a young athlete to watch in the coming years!
