GLL have teamed up with I Am Team GB and ITV for their Open Days running on the 27th August. Post Olympics, these Open Days aim to inspire the community to come and take part in free taster sessions and to become more active in the long term. Many GLL centres offered a pre Olympic Open Day in which GLL Sport Foundation athletes attended to help out with the day, provide inspirational speeches and answer questions. The Open Days were well attended by families including younger and older generations alike with positive feedback and lots of sign ups throughout the UK centres.
The Waterfront Leisure Centre held an “I AM GB” event in Greenwich on the 23rd July 2016. From 10am-2pm Greenwich residents were able to take part in a swim clinic held by GSF athlete Natasha Sinha and taster sessions that included Football, Basketball, Swimming, Badminton and Table Tennis.
45 people attended the swimming taster session that Natasha helped to run and provided demos. She has since competed at the British Championships and reached the final and gained a personal best. Natasha also brought her 2012 Olympic torch which she used to inspire young children and take photos.
Mile End held an Open Day on the same day which had great numbers turnout for tennis. GSF athletes Holly Thomas and Lennox Thompson attended the event and helped to coach the athletes and speak about their athletic journeys.
The London Aquatics Centre held swimming and diving tasters throughout the day and Olympian Daniel Fogg attended the event. He was part of a Q&A session where club swimmers were able to ask him about his Olympic career and what he is doing now.
Canons Leisure Centre held their Open Day on the 24th of July and Merton Weightlifting Club represented the GLL Sport Foundation. They provided demonstrations and coached individuals that wanted to give it a try out on the MUGA pitches.
Hendon Leisure Centre held a Gymnastics Open Day to encourage new participants find a new passion for the sport. Demonstrations were given from the club, which included GSF athlete Mikail Balabey who also did some Q&A sessions.
Dorcan Recreation Complex in Swindon held a multi event Open Day which included a fun circuit Decathlon. GSF athlete and GB Powerlifter Charlie Shotton-Gale attended the event and joined in with some of the activities and spoke to participants about her sport.
Back to London West, Dormers Wells held an Open Day which included multi activities throughout the day targeting young children. GSF athlete and GB U22 Wheelchair Basketballer Christy Gregan attending the Junior Basketball session. He helped to coach the kids and also did a Q&A session at the end which went down very well with the kids who were certainly inspired.
Britannia Leisure Centre played host to one of the many open days held across the company. The focus of the open day was to engaged juniors in the wide range of activities that are on offer through lessons and courses, crash courses and sports clubs. Activities on the day included Kendo, Athletics, Basketball, Football, Gymnastics and Table Tennis. There were also other fun activities for children including face painting, bouncy castle and mini Olympics with medal ceremony to conclude the day.
Around 50 children took part in activities throughout the day. GSF and Team GB Athletes Margret Adeoye (4x400m) who is going to Rio and JJ Jegede (Long Jump) held an interactive athletics session and delivered some question and answer opportunities.
We’d like to thank all GSF athletes that attended the Open Days and gave up their free time to inspire the next generation of young athletes. Our next Open Days will be on the 27th of August, teamed up with I Am Team GB and ITV so will receive a lot of media coverage and hopefully encourage people new to sport and physical activity to take part and continue participating long term.
